I just realized that the length of a pen is a very important piece of information for me, especially when comparing similar pens or models within a series or brand. I really would love to see that added as a separate column.
I also find the length useful, though it’s the unposted length that matters to me. I don’t think I understand the system well enough to judge if a dedicated column is justified or not, though
The overall capped length is normally the basic measurement that gives you an idea of how big a pen is. For example, there are dozens of different antique Kaweco Dia models from the late 1930’s through the late 1950’s, but they differ widely in size - from some models that are barely 120 mm to models that are 135-140mm. So I find it important to have a quick reference to their size, instead of remembering what size each model number was…
Like, when it’s closed?
Yes, that is what the term “capped” means in pen circles.
Makes sense. What do you find more useful about the capped length?
Hi,
sorry for the late reply. I’ve heard multiple people ask for multiple additional columns. Both for pens and inks.
It’s always a struggle to add new ones as the space is limited and it’s already pretty cluttered (even if you can hide the ones you don’t want). I am now thinking that it would still be useful for people to add their own (private) columns.
However, I don’t yet know when I’ll get around to it so for now you’ll have to make do with the existing columns and add the data there. The obvious one to use is the comments column, but you can of course use whatever you want.
As I mentioned before, it helps me tell the difference between different models of a particular brand or series of pens (like the Kaweco Dia which has a long history with at least 20 different varieties and sizes).
But it also helps me quickly see the difference between full sized pens (125-145mm capped or closed) and ring top pens, pocket pens, and compact pens (anywhere from 60mm to 110mm normally)
Interesting. I suppose I just don’t have enough reference points for such numbers to have the same meaning to me
