De-duplicate doubles in brand names (issue with master data)

Hello @danielb

Love this site; thank you for all the hard work.

  1. The site is sensitive to capitalization in brand name (OK), but does not prevent accidental brand name duplication due to capitalization (not OK)

Example: it currently counts sailor and Sailor as two different brands.
Some other examples include: Colorverse/ColorVerse, Kittyinkpot/KittyInkpot, l’artisan pastellier/L’Artisan Pastellier.

  1. This may extend to accents. Example: L’Ecritoire/L’Écritoire. I have not tested whether this is also the case

Can the master list of brands be cleaned up, please?
At least for the brands already in the database, I want my brand count to be accurate. Thank you.

If I can help in the clean-up I would be happy to receive the complete list of brands and create an old->new mapping table for cleansing the data.

Background: I’m engaged in a 'brand battle" with a friend. We are competing to see who has the most brands. we have both found that we are over-counting the number of brands we own due to this capitalization issue in brand naming.

Hey,

could you give me some details on where the brands are being counted? In your private list of inks (there’s a footer row) or the brands leaderboard?

Both are pretty dumb in the sense that they just look at how many different entries there are in the column and it’s not surprising that they might not be counted as you want.

In your specific case I assume both you and your friend could go through your lists and just use one spelling. I am not sure how that wouldn’t work in the current system.

Hello Urban

Thank you for the rapid reply!

We have been looking at the count on the brands leaderboard. There it counts Sailor and sailor as two brands.

I just tested the private list and it works the same way (I only use ‘Sailor’. I added a ‘sailor’ ink and the brand counter went up by one).

Yes, we are both now keeping our own lists clean (one spelling per brand) so we can compare apples with apples in our personal “battle of the brands”.
Clean lists work perfectly, thank you.

We are both quite competitive, so we are also looking at the other users in the top 20 on the brands leaderboard. We are seeing that, for many of them, their totals are higher than they should be because of “double counting” of one sort or another. Almost certainly accidental on their part… Hence our offer to help clean the master data for the brand field

I fully understand that the number of people for whom this is a problem is a tiny tiny number. And I’m sure there are many other requests that, if developed, will have a beneficial impact for many more users.

Still, just thought we’d mention it.

Best regards
Paul

Hey Paul,

turns out that I already have all the data. I do keep a clean list of inks and brands, after all. I am just now making the change to only count actual brands.

Brilliant, thank you Urban!

That’s great news! I have noticed that typos and mis-spellings also come up as separate brands on the master list. eg ‘Penonia’ in addition to Pennonia.

Yeah, those I still need to fix by hand and you’ll have to let me know.
