My understanding was that whenever you enter a new currently inked pen a usage record is added, but that doesn’t seem to happen. Am I wrong on that?
The usage records are completely separate. So even for the first day you’ll have to press the button to get a usage record entry.

There seems to be a learning curve. I am new to fountain pens and the first thing I learned is how much I don’t know.
