Making sense of Sailor's model numbering scheme

Sailor uses the following model number scheme:

TT-PPMM-NCC

The numbers have the following meaning:

TT - pen type:

  • 10 - Arita ceramic FPs, 甲州印傳 (Koshu imprint?) line, but for some reason also the 1911 Fude de Mannen, some fountain pens
  • 11 - Fountain pens
  • 12 - The new Fude de Mannen pens
  • 13 - Fountain pen ink
  • 16 - Ballpoint, Rollerball, Multi-pens
  • 18 - Rollerball refill
  • 21 - Mechanical pencil
  • 27 - Brush tipped pens
  • 28 - Brush tip refill
  • 66 - DAKS line
  • 81 - Gel pens (not sure)

PP - price:

  • Price in thousand Yens, for expensive pens, price in ten thousand Yens. For example, “XX-10XX-” can be 10k Yens or 100k Yens
  • This can be tricky because special pens, for example KOP, and the Davidoff line have “9X” or “99” here. In the first case, the second number shows the price in thousand Yens. For example “96” is a KOP, and costs 60k Yens.
  • Also, it seems, that the numbering of the new pens with Naginata speciality nibs start with “7” here, despite costing less than 70k Yen. I didn’t find the pattern for the second number in this case yet.

MM - submodel:

  • Denotes the different furnitures (and maybe finishes) for a pen model. For example, 10-9618 is a PG KOP with gold trim (black body), and 10-9619 is the same pen with Rhodium furniture. This second number is the same for the black body and demo PG KOPs. Didn’t find any overall pattern yet, how the numbers are given.

N - nib size:

  • 0 - Saibi Togi
  • 1 - Extra fine
  • 2 - Fine
  • 3 - Medium fine
  • 4 - Medium
  • 6 - Broad
  • 7 - Zoom
  • 9 - Music

CC - color code for the pen body:

  • 00 - clear/demo, or standard code for special pen bodies (i.e. Arita)
  • 10 - white
  • 17 - off white
  • 20 - black, standard code, for wood also for example
  • 30 - red
  • 32 - bordeaux
  • 40 - blue
  • 44 - blue black (inks)
  • 50 - purple?
  • 60 - green
  • 70 - yellow
